3 Mauritian PhD students shine at the European Conference of Tropical Ecology – Lisbon
At the heart of theEuropean Conference of Tropical Ecology in Lisbon, three young Mauritian researchers captivated the audience with their innovative work on biodiversity.
Funded by the Varuna Biodiversity program, through the University of Mauritius, their theses are enriching our knowledge to improve our understanding and action to preserve our natural heritage in the south-west Indian Ocean region.
Innovative theses on the preservation of biodiversity:
- Mohammad I.Z.A. S. Abbas presented his work on the use of application of spatial conservation for terrestrial ecosystem management, which will serve as a global systematic review focusing on tropical islands.
- François Baguette shared his research on reviewing the roles of tropical pioneer trees in restoration. The management of the Harungana madagascariensis (hypericaceae) problem was presented as a model.
- And finally, Ghanishta Seeburrun presented her research on examining the impact of alien species on the biodiversity of a tropical oceanic island.
Towards a sustainable future for generations to come:
These presentations highlight the commitment of Mauritian researchers to the preservation of their island’s biodiversity and their significant contribution to global ecological research. Their exemplary work inspires hope for a future in which the biological diversity of Mauritius and other regions of the Indian Ocean is preserved for future generations.
