The “Living Labs” project is implemented by the Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (Cirad). Cirad is the French agricultural research and international cooperation organisation working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions. It has been operating in the region for decades.

 

The project

This Cirad-led project consists in setting up territorial Living Labs for the adaptive co-management of forest biodiversity. These should enable the development of innovations (technical and social) that reconcile conservation and development of forest systems.

Areas of intervention: Madagascar and the Union of the Comoros

Partners:

  • France: Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (LPED, SENS), Muséum national d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris (MNHN)
  • Madagascar: Université d’Antananarivo (ESSA-forêt, MBEV), Centre National de Recherche Appliquée au Développement Rural, Centre National de Recherches sur l’Environnement
  • Union of Comoros: Université des Comores (Law and Geography departments), Parc national de Mohéli

Activities:

  • Conduct an inventory of the diversity of knowledge on the management of forest biodiversity and on the collaborative tools relevant to this theme and transmit it to all the actors concerned at the regional level and at the level of the three pilot territories
  • Build a community of actors at the level of each pilot territory around a shared representation of the issues and the identification of innovations necessary for the adaptive co-management of forest biodiversity
  • Define territorial Living Labs for the adaptive co-management of forest biodiversity through the implementation of collective experiments in social and technical innovations that reconcile the conservation and enhancement of forest systems.
  • Produce recommendations for the implementation of territorial Living Labs for forest biodiversity management in other island territories of the Indian Ocean
