Project 7 – Disseminating knowledge on biodiversity

The “Magazine” project of the Varuna program is implemented by Les Naturalistes de Mayotte (LNM). The association of Mayotte’s naturalists was founded in 1999. It aims to showcase, popularise and protect Mayotte’s cultural and natural heritage.
The project
This project aims to produce and distribute a popular scientific journal on biodiversity in the south-west Indian Ocean in order to bring together decision-makers, scientists and citizens around these issues.
Areas of intervention: Union of the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, France, Seychelles and beyond.
Partners: Actors involved in research and the implementation of actions on biodiversity issues in the Indian Ocean (universities, experts and institutes, civil society, etc.)
Activities:
- Designing a journal that acts as a relay for knowledge resulting from research, good practices and exemplary initiatives: defining an editorial line and setting up an editorial team, mobilising a network of actors for the production of knowledge, developing a readership and web and graphic tools adapted to the creation of the journal
- The journal is produced and disseminated online and in print to decision-makers, scientists and citizens of the South-West region of the Indian Ocean
- Production and editing of articles
- Management of the web journal
- Production, printing and distribution of the printed journal
- Construction of a supported economic model for which additional funding ensures the sustainability of the activity beyond the Varuna funding
