A PHOTO COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS IN THE SOUTH-WEST INDIAN OCEAN

By : Varuna team

The Varuna program, financed by the French Development Agency and implemented by Expertise France, aims to contribute to halting biodiversity loss on the islands of the south-west Indian Ocean. And, in particular, by strengthening the links between science and society to put biodiversity back at the heart of our exchanges.

With this in mind, we are pleased to announce on October 03, 2023 the launch of the Varuna Biodiversity Photo Competition, reserved for students and pupils in higher education in the southwest Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Union of the Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Reunion and Mayotte).

The aim of this initiative is to promote the exceptional natural wealth of these islands, which form one of the world’s main biodiversity hotspots. The competition get the younger generation more involved in the preservation of this shared heritage, and why not, as a bonus, reveal new talents in the field of image in the region.

This year, the Varuna program teams have chosen the following theme: “People at the heart of biodiversity”. Because preserving life is first and foremost a matter of mobilising human communities.

A jury made up of biodiversity specialists, scientists and image professionals from various countries in the region and Europe will select the best images.

A number of prizes will be awarded to the winners, including photographic equipment and software. And the best images will be published in the popular science magazine Gecko, devoted entirely to the region’s biodiversity.
