Mission of the Varuna Living Forest project team to Mohéli from June 13 to 23, 2023
The “Living Forest” project, led by the Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (Cirad), as part of the Varuna Biodiversité program, is being implemented on 3 pilot sites: 2 in Madagascar (Ranomafana and Tampolo) and 1 in the Union of the Comoros (Mohéli).
The project is designed to set up territorial “Living Labs” for the adaptive co-management of forest biodiversity, enabling the development of innovations (technical and social) that reconcile the conservation and valuation of forest systems.
Following an initial mission in January 2023, teams of teachers – researchers from the University of the Comoros and CIRAD took part in a field mission to the Comoros, in Mohéli from June 13 to 23.
Focus on Mohéli:
Mohéli, also known as Mwali, is an island in the Union of Comoros, located in the Indian Ocean at the northern entrance to the Mozambique Channel. It is one of the four main islands that make up the Comoros archipelago.
What was the aim of this mission?
The aim of this mission was to conduct an inventory of the diversity of knowledge on forest biodiversity management and collaborative tools relevant to this theme, and to define a shared roadmap comprising various activities:
– Collection of village stories from schoolchildren and international experts
– Creation of playlets to mobilize forum theater
– Setting up a digital information system

With the collaboration of local populations, private sector players and public administrations, the results of this mission will be shared with those of the Malagasy sites at a regional workshop on October 10 and 11 in Madagascar!
