Results of the 2023 edition photo competition

By : Varuna team

Launched this year by the Varuna Biodiversity program, the first edition of the photo competition on the 2023 theme of “Humans at the heart of biodiversity” highlights the finest shots taken by amateur photographers in the south-west Indian Ocean region.

Reserved exclusively for students in higher education in the South-West Indian Ocean zone, the 9 jurors rewarded 4 winners out of the 40 candidates and 136 photos that competed, whose images reflect the beauty and diversity of the living natural heritage of the islands of the South-West Indian Ocean in connection with its inhabitants.

The winners :

  • 3rd place went to Michel Rahajanirina Ratsizafy, for his black and white photo of “Pêcheur d’algues” (“Seaweed fisherman”).
  • In 2nd place was Aroniaina Manampitahiana Falinirina, with his photo of ” Suivi écologique en milieu marin “(“Ecological monitoring in a marine environment”).
  • And finally, first prize in the competition, went to David Mahasetra Razafimbohitra, for his fascinating photo entitled “Baobabs at dawn”.

Prize-giving ceremony :

The prizes include a camera, a smartphone, a subscription to Photoshop software and all winners will have their photos published in the popular science magazine Gecko, devoted entirely to the region’s biodiversity.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held early next year in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

On the strength of this success, a second edition of the photo contest will be organized in 2024, with, we hope, many more beautiful photos to come! So stay tuned to our social networks for further news!
