Training on Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounts : A Commitment to Protecting our Ecosystems
The Varuna biodiversité program, as part of the “Natural Capital Network” project, led by Université des Mascareignes, is organizing a training course dedicated to Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounts (ENCA), which will take place from September 16 to October 4, 2024, at the University of Mascareignes, Mauritius.
What is Ecosystemic Natural Capital Accounting (ENCA)?
ENCA is an innovative method that allows for precise evaluation of the impact of human activities on ecosystems. Unlike traditional approaches that focus only on economic indicators, ENCA considers the ecological value of ecosystems, including biomass, water, and biodiversity. This approach aims to achieve an ambitious goal: zero net degradation of ecosystems.
Training objectives
This training course, fully funded by the VARUNA program, aims to equip decision-makers, researchers, civil servants and NGO members with the skills they need to integrate ecological values into their decision-making processes. Based on ecosystem accounts, participants will learn to:
- Measure the ecological impact of economic activities: Using tools such as the CALC_ENCA calculation model, they will be able to assess ecosystem degradation and improvements.
- Produce ecosystem accounts: The training will include practical sessions on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Kangaré software, enabling participants to produce accounts by themselves.
- Raising awareness and influence public policies: Ecosystem accounts provide valuable indicators that can be used to guide public policies towards environmental sustainability goals.
Practical details
The course will last for three weeks, with 3-hour sessions each day, Monday to Friday. Participants will have the option of attending the training in person at the Université des Mascareignes or online, thus facilitating the participation of people from neighboring islands.
Dates: September 16 – October 4, 2024
Location: Université des Mascareignes, Mauritius (face-to-face) or online
Language: Mainly in French, with clarifications in English if necessary
Registration: Registration is open until September 11, 2024 via this online form.
Conclusion
The Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounts training course represents a unique opportunity for all those committed to environmental protection.
