To halt the erosion of biodiversity in the islands of the south-west Indian Ocean, for the benefit of the region's populations.

The Varuna program, implemented by Expertise France and financed by AFD – Agence Française de Développement, aims to halt biodiversity loss in the southwestern Indian Ocean, a world class hot spot subject to increasing pressures.

The Varuna programme is based on 3 areas of intervention:

  1. Structuring networks of regional actors to encourage coordinated efforts to preserve biodiversity
  2. Support the mainstreaming of ecological transition issues among economic actors
  3. Encourage the contribution of research to the Science-Society dialogue on biodiversity

Each area includes two to three projects led by one or more partners active in the region.

All of them have a common objective: to work together to preserve biodiversity for the benefit of the region’s inhabitants.
